Here Are Some Common Recruitment Questions

Membership Types

We are currently recruiting for dedicated individuals who are interested in becoming a firefighter or junior firefighter with the Abington Fire Company. These roles are critical in the operation of our organization and helps ensure that the community we serve can rely on our professional volunteers to assist them in their most critical time of need.

Firefighter

Volunteering as a firefighter is one of the most rewarding opportunities an individual can take part in. The ability to keep your community safe in it’s deepest time of need. Being a volunteer firefighter is nothing like any other service you have done. It becomes part of your life, and gives back immense amounts of satisfaction in knowing that what you do plays an essential role in your communities success. (18+ years of age)

Junior Firefighter

We have a Junior Firefighter program which allows individuals that are not yet 18 (the state minimum to fight active fires) to learn the job and participate in many aspects of the company. From riding to calls and helping at incidents, to participating in the same type of training as regular members. Minimum age for the Junior Firefighter program is 16 years old. (16-17 years of age)

Membership FAQ's

Here are some common questions we receive from potential new members to our organization.  We will continue to update this list of frequently asked questions as we receive them.  If a question you have is not answered below, please feel free to contact us online and we will be certain to answer them.

What Prior Training or Experience is Required to Join?

No experience/training is required to join! Training is essential part of keep our members and the community safe, and is provided to all of our members free of charge. We provided weekly in house training, regularly schedule Department training, and numerous outside training opportunities annually. Those with experience are also certainly encouraged to apply!

Do I Have to Live at the Firehouse?

No, our members respond to calls from home, work, running errands, and anywhere they may be when the call comes in.

How Much Will I Get Paid?

We are a 100% volunteer organization, and while we do not provide a paycheck, we provide value experience, training, and the opportunity to support your community in one of it’s most essential needs, safety.

How Old Do I Have to be to Join?

16 years old to join with limitations, but 18 years old to get the full firefighting experience.

If My Child Joins, Will Their Grades Suffer?

A successful students makes a successful firefighter. As such, we have in place company regulations, and follow state law, to ensure junior members do not allow their education to suffer. One example is our restrictions on time junior members are allowed to be at the fire station and/or responding to calls. We are more than happy to review these guidelines with parents during the membership application process and answer any questions you may have.
